This just so happens to be vital for life. If you were to live on a planet with less mass, you would weigh less and be able to jump much higher. Gravity is the reason objects on Earth have weight and do not simply float off into space. Arguments about how it works aside, whatever gravity is, it is a very important element for life on our planet. Gravity is one of the most fundamental forces in the universe. Many physicists hope to one day create a unified theory of macro and quantum physics that will help explain what is going on. This is one of the biggest issues in physics today. On the grand scale, our current theories of gravity are pretty useful for helping to predict the behavior of large objects, but at the teenie tiny quantum scale, the current theories of gravity do not work. It just doesn't seem to fit, and we don't know why.
